Dear MPs

A Letter to present and future MPs of New Zealand

I write this letter to point out the obvious, that in these times, we the people struggle. We miss the rights we once had, We miss the fruits of our labour, We miss our families and communities we once lived in. So I put pen to paper, in a hope to inspire you to do better, and to remind you that as we elect you to your position of governorship and that you have a responsibility to the people.

8 hour-day, 40 hour working week

"There are twenty-four hours per day given us; eight of these should be for work, eight for sleep, and the remaining eight for recreation and in which for men to do what little things they want for themselves." - Samuel Duncan Parnell
"Eight hours' labour, Eight hours' recreation, Eight hours' rest." - Robert Owen

The expense we face by our high living costs, is time away from our families. That cost is not something to be scoffed at, we want to raise our children in a right and proper manner, but we are forced to weight putting food on the table verses time spent with family.

We work hard and some of us much more than should be asked of us. By ensuring the 8 hour-day principle you strengthening our families and communities, you support learning, arts, and culture through proxy.

A home is where our heart is

"As soon as the land of any country has all become private property, the landlords, like all other men, love to reap where they never sowed, and demand a rent even for its natural produce." - Adam Smith

We are no less productive than the last generation, but we struggle. Our rent pays the mortgage of another, without a hope of saving for our own home. We do not ask for a house, but only a home, so that we can build a family, provide security for our children.

It is indeed possible to provide a warm, dry, home to every heart that beats in this nation, do not shift this task to someone else but make it your own responsibility.

Return profit to the people

"It appears, accordingly, from the experience of all ages and nations, I believe, that the work done by freemen comes cheaper in the end than that performed by slaves." - Adam Smith

As we work hard in our daily lives to prosper, we watch as our profits are paid as dividends to overseas interests. A societies profits should not be siphoned overseas but should remain with the people that produced them.

Construction of infrastructure

"Good roads, canals, and navigable rivers, by diminishing the expense of carriage, put the remote parts of the country more nearly upon a level with those of the neighbourhood of the town. They are upon that the greatest of all improvements." - Adam Smith

Our expense of travel is not measured as easily in money but in time. We spend an over proportional amount of time, that should be spent on other endeavours, on a daily commute.

Looking at the time wasted, it is so simple that I can see the effects. A loss of 2 hours a day in travel is a reduction of time spent with family and in our communities.

Freedom from debt

"We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt." – Thomas Jefferson

Do not be frivolous with our money, and no not borrow without regard. First at least try to raise funds from the people of this nation. Given the opportunity we will invest in our own infrastructure. We would rather save the cost of debt and invest more.

We must see that you are responsible, as a director of a company is accountable to its shareholders, you should be held no less accountable. Transparency is important, without confidence in you and those you delegate tasks, we cannot invest with faith alone.

We as individuals cannot do this, but collectively we elect you to do this in our steed. Do not pay us lip service, we are desperate for change, and in our desperation we can vote with our heart and not our brain. It is important that you listen and hear what we say.

I thank you for your time, and urge you to what we elected you for

Regards,
